Brunel University – Aluminium Extrusion 100 Tonne Testing Machine

Brief

Design and manufacture a bespoke testing machine capable of gripping aluminium extrusions, applying controlled tensile force and accurately measuring both the applied load and resulting elongation to assess material performance and properties.

Industry

Aluminium Extrusion / Automotive Research

Challenge

A specialist testing machine was required to evaluate the structural performance of aluminium extrusions, with no suitable off-the-shelf solution available. The system needed to apply consistent, measurable force while capturing accurate data on material behaviour under stress.

IJF Solution

We worked from initial concept through to full delivery, developing a bespoke solution based on established testing principles and adapting them to suit the specific application.

The design was refined through a collaborative process, ensuring the machine could securely grip a range of extrusion profiles while applying controlled tensile loads and capturing accurate measurement data. Consideration was given to usability, repeatability and overall system reliability throughout development.

All components were manufactured and assembled in-house, with the complete system tested prior to delivery. Installation and commissioning were carried out on-site to ensure the machine operated correctly within the customer’s environment and met the required performance criteria.

Outcome

The completed machine was successfully delivered and remains in active use, supporting ongoing testing and research.
